College Profile

Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, a premium multi-faculty institution of higher education in the City Beautiful, Chandigarh, was established in 1982. Spread over a spacious campus of nearly 18 acres in the southern part of Chandigarh, the college has emerged as an all- encompassing institute. It imparts education to more than 3000 students in the streams of Commerce, Humanities, Science and Computer Applications. A bouquet of multiple courses offered by the college comprises of Doctorate Course in Zoology, Master's Degree Courses in 06 subjects and PG Diploma Courses in 03 subjects. With the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from this session, Bachelor's Degree Courses will have multifarious subject combinations, along with options from baskets of Multi-Disciplinary Courses, Value Added Courses and Skill Enhancement Courses. Students presently in the 2nd year can opt for Honours course in 15 subjects of Arts and Commerce.The students of 2nd and 3rd year can also avail 10 Add-On/ Career Oriented Courses and thus, they gain dual degree on graduating. Varied Courses available are Animation and Graphics; Bioinformatics; Cosmetology; Disaster Management; Environmental Auditing; Entrepreneurship; Event Management; Mass Communication and Video Production; Tourism and Travel Management; Web Designing and Multi Media.As many as 204 subject combinations in Arts and 24 in Sciences can be opted by a student. Our College has also become the first city Government College to be approved as a Research Centre in the Subject of Zoology by Panjab University, Chandigarh.A team of 92 dedicated and highly qualified faculty members facilitate effectual teaching and contribute in shaping the GenNext. The college has 04 Professors, 23 Associate Professors and 65 Assistant Professors which include 58 Ph.D. and 15 M.Phil. degree holders. With the emphasis on consistent enhancement of skills and research, the faculty has published more than 421 research papers and 143 books (with ISBN). Till date, faculty members of distinct departments have completed 13 Major, 25 Minor and 03 Consultancy Projects sponsored by various agencies. Also, 76 research scholars have been enrolled for Ph.D under the able guidance of 20 faculty members. In addition to this, support staff of 136 members help in the efficient running of the college.Many of the faculty members are members of the Board of Studies, added members of different faculties of Panjab University, Chandigarh, member of Academic Council and also actively involved in framing curriculum and creating learning resources for other government institutes/ universities.

Embellished with well-maintained  gardens, vast playgrounds, 100 mbps lease line, an exclusive Information Technology Block with cutting edge facilities; a well-equipped fully air-conditioned library equipped with INFLIBNET, RIFD, browsing facility, gymnasium, Wi-Fi hostel facility with all modern amenities, stationery shop; food court and fruit & juice stall.

To impart holistic training, the college undertakes extension activities through eight units of N.S.S., one unit of NCC (Army Wing), ten societies such as Commerce Society, Cultural and Heritage society, Environment society 'Srishti' , Gender Equity society, Health society, Literary society, Olympic Movement society, Science society, Self Defense/ General Fitness / Traffic Awareness and Road Safety society, Stress Management and  Drug De-Addiction society that aids the students to sensitize about major personal, social and health issues. The college magazine "SHIKHAR", the college newsletter, 'Scoop' and the departmental activities all provide the students a platform to hone their potential and capabilities. The college has Women Cell, Career Guidance and Placement Cell, Anti-Ragging Committee and Anti-sexual Harassment committee function in tandem with various departments to facilitate students.
